Here's a little something about me. I love "Buffy: the Vampire Slayer" and I have watched the entire series repeatedly. Joss Whedon is a wonderful writer and I have found gems of dialog in his shows.
Here's a conversation between two characters, Xander and Anya. They were engaged, but Xander left Anya at the altar because he didn't want to hurt her by marrying her when he had doubts that he could do right by her. Very painful episode, by the way.
In this scene, which happens a year or so after the non-wedding, we see the difference between male-speak and female-speak:
Xander: You said you were over me.
Anya: And you just accepted that? I only said that because I thought that's what you wanted to hear.
Xander: Well, that's the funny thing about me. I tend to hear the actual words people say and accept them at face value.
Anya: That's stupid
Xander: I accept that.
Women and men communicate for different reasons. Women communicate to build relationships (rapport) while men communicate to give data (report). This is based on socio-linguist Deborah Tannen's work.
If you are a man who finds female-speak to be indecipherable, contact me. I can help! If you are a woman who has trouble getting your point across, I can help you too.
